The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed a major victim in the British poker world as Genting is ceasing all live poker activity in the United Kingdom.
PokerNews was aware of rumours circulating regarding Genting not reopening its live poker operations before an employee reached out to us. The Genting employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, informed PokerNews they work in the Birmingham cardroom and have been told “Genting will cease all live poker in their casinos.”

After multiple delays, the group hopes to launch its 20th Century Fox movie-inspired theme park - the world’s first - at Resorts World Genting later this year and open Resorts World Las Vegas in. The cessation of live poker operations comes less than a week after Genting announced it is considering the closing of three of its UK casino.
GMB, the union for leisure and hospitality workers, revealed Genting casinos in Bristol, Margate, and Torquay are set to permanently close, resulting in significant job losses. GMB also warned of possible job losses across the company’s remaining 29 sites.
Paul Willcock, the President and COO of Genting UK, sent a statement to his employees, which read in part, “The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges. It has had a huge financial impact on our business and caused significant uncertainty for the foreseeable future. Twin River is a fairly small casino located in Lincoln, Rhode Island just outside of Providence. They are somewhat of a hybrid between a resort-casino and a racino, though they do not offer a hotel or any amenities. The venue started out in the 1940’s as “Lincoln Raceway” which strictly offered thoroughbred and greyhound racing. Since that time they have underwent several ownership/management changes, and it wasn’t until 1992 when they expanded their gaming options to feature slot machines. It is worth noting that the age to gamble here, like most Rhode Island casinos, is just 18 years old.
In 2013 Twin River started to expand its gambling options and began offering table games. This was in part due to nearby competition from places like Foxwoods, Mohegan and other resort casinos which opened up in neighboring states like Connecticut. Twin River Blackjack Minimum Betting
The casino at Twin River offers both smoke-free and smoking floors, with the 1st floor allowing smoking and the second floor not allowing it. The casino as a whole currently has 108 table games and more than 4,200 virtual games like slots, virtual blackjack, video poker etc. Since they now offer live blackjack, I’m not sure why you would want to play it on a machine, but you do have the option. The slots available here include all the popular games like Buffalo, Quick Hit, Wheel of Fortune, Top Dollar and other casino favorites.
In their smoke-free second floor section, they have about 28 table games and 800 slots. This means that a large majority of the games offered at Twin River are located within the smoking area. The table games offered here include all the usual suspects like blackjack, Baccarat, Pai Gow, Roulette, Let it Ride, Craps, Three Card Poker and the likes.
They also have an all new Poker Room, though I have never been there. The Poker Room apparently has a total of 16 tables which offer a mix of 7-card stud and Texas Hold’Em (both limit and no limit). The last time I visited Twin River was probably in 2014, and from what I remember it was not very impressive. The casino seemed to be pretty depressing overall, and was also very smoky. Their virtual machines do not utilize RNG’s but rather use a video lottery terminal system, which is different from other popular gambling destinations like Vegas or AC.Racebook at Twin River
The Twin River Casino offers a fairly large racebook which is now smoke-free. They offer free Greyhound and Harness Racing Programs, which can be a plus if you are a racing enthusiast. There are plenty of seats here, as well as a number of televisions with live simulcasts, so you are usually able to find a seat and watch the races you bet on. Though they had offered live greyhound racing for several decades, in the end it became to costly to operate (draining them of over $10 million per year). In 2010 they ceased hosting the live greyhound races, but you are still able to bet on similar races via the racebook which simulcasts events from other tracks. One of the benefits of visiting Twin River is it’s large offering of food options. Though not as substantial as some of the larger names in gaming, they do offer a nice selection and also employ two world renowned chefs. Their dining options range from an upscale steakhouse to several food courts as well as a few bars, pubs and lounges. Below is a full list of dining options you have at Twin River.

As you can see from the list above, Twin River offers more in the way of fast food and national food-chains then they do gourmet or upscale food joints. They do offer one somewhat upscale steakhouse, which I guess is a plus and they have a nice selection of bars. Twin River does offer a player rewards program. The program is pretty standard when compared to others such as the Total Rewards program from Caesars. When you are signed up for the program, you will receive a card, which will allow you to acquire points when playing. Points can be used for free play, buying gifts at their store or for food. They will also mail/email you promotions and free play. The only downside is, the points/card is not applicable to any other casinos, so it must be used at Twin River.Hotel at Twin River
Like many other racetrack casinos, Twin River does not currently have an on-site hotel or resort. This means if you are visiting you’ll either have to plan a day-trip or choose a hotel that’s nearby. After a few recent trips in the lap of luxury, I felt it was time to take a drop in class and return to the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. The former Lincoln Park greyhound track has made some strides since its ’dog days,’ adding table games to its array of slot machines. While Twin River is primarily a ’local’s casino,’ the property has tried attracting bigger players with a multi-tiered comping system and has its share of VIP lounge treatment.
Background on Twin River (100 Twin River Rd., Lincoln, RI)
I first visited Lincoln in 2002, taking in a day of greyhound racing while betting the Belmont Stakes simulcast, as War Emblem went for the ’Triple Crown.’ Later that evening, the venue showed the Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson fight on its monitors, while I wagered a few dollars on jai-alai, coming from Newport’s now-defunct fronton.
Over a decade later, I returned in 2013 after Twin River publicized it was adding table games. My heart was pumping with a five-figure bank check of ammunition but, would you believe, the cashier’s cage would not accept it. I was told ’no check process or credit lines were in play yet;’ however, a host offered me dinner at the property’s signature ’Fred & Steve’s Steakhouse’ the next time I returned with cash.
I ventured back again last year but without a big bankroll to work with. My summer of 2014 got off to a cruel start, washing out in Atlantic City’s marina for a hefty sum. It was back to the $25 tables for a while and Twin River was a fun place at that time to get the feel back.
Blackjack rules include surrender, splitting allowed up to three hands, and the dealer standing on soft 17’s at nearly all tables. Eight-deck shoes are present through most of the casino’s main floor, with a favorable 80 percent penetration. Tables with minimums of $50 and higher use six decks, but no difference in rules, other than ’no mid-shoe entry permitted.’ The six-deck offerings have more dealer-dependent penetration, generally resulting in the lower 65-70 percent range.
Last year’s limited bankroll turned into a few winning trips, and even my lowly $50-75 average bet was enough for entry into the VIP lounge. Complimentary alcoholic drinks are available in the lounges, while servers on the casino floor charge for them. Security is also prevalent (in fact, guards recently confronted a rice cooker left in the parking lot that they thought was a bomb). Unfortunately, they were after more than kitchen appliances as my visits continued to Lincoln.
Drowning Deep in the Ocean State
My stakes went back up to black-chip action later on last year as old habits die hard. After I experienced a losing stretch, Twin River began mailing some higher-end comps. I received offers for a free Norwegian cruise, various show tickets, and complimentary rooms at the nearby Marriott Hotel.
After I made my way back to Lincoln this past August, the only change from prior visits was the addition of a pit of non-smoking table games located on the venue’s second floor. Conditions for blackjack remained the same, while craps tables still had 10x and 5x odds posted. A race book also stayed in play, with betting action from all over, aligning with the property’s early roots. Live poker is also expected to open by the end of the year.
The main floor was crowded on a Saturday afternoon, despite superb weather in the area and Rhode Island’s share of beaches not far away. I was unable to immediately grab a pair of adjacent seats for blackjack (preferring my usual ’betting on two-spot routine’), so I started out playing Pai Gow Poker instead.
About twenty minutes later, I shifted to an open $25 blackjack table and flat-bet a green chip on each of my two spots. The ‘monkeys’ (i.e., blackjacks) hit the felt early and I saw no need to press while getting settled in. Halfway through the shoe, the game was called to a stop, and several security guards were positioned near the table...

Let it Ride is a simple poker-based game based on the poker value of a final five-card hand. Start by making three equal bets. This is done by clicking a chip and then clicking on the spot marked with a $ sign on the table. The game will put an equal bet on the other two spots for you.
